Bob Mackie, Renowned Hollywood Costume Designer and 'Sultan of Sequins,' Dies at 87

Bob Mackie, the visionary American fashion and costume designer whose glittering, showstopping creations defined generations of entertainment icons including Cher, Sir Elton John, Dolly Parton, and Tina Turner, has died at the age of 87.

The news of his passing was confirmed on Monday through a heartfelt statement released on his official Instagram profile. His representatives remembered him as a creator who lived his 87 years to the fullest while realizing his lifelong aspiration of working in costume and fashion design. The statement emphasized that his extraordinary artistic genius and singular body of work would endure indefinitely, continuing to bring beauty to the world.

Universally celebrated as the "Sultan of Sequins" due to his masterful command of rhinestones, beads, and high-wattage glamour, Mackie built an illustrious career that spanned television, theater, and film. Over several decades in the industry, his inventive styling earned him nine Emmy Awards, a Tony Award, and three separate Academy Award nominations.

Born Robert Gordon Mackie in Monterey Park, California, in 1939, the designer discovered his passion for wardrobe creation at an early age. He embarked on his professional path in Hollywood by working as a sketch artist for the prominent French-American costume designer Jean Louis, quickly establishing a reputation for his intricate hand and vivid imagination.

During that early phase of his career, Mackie played a pivotal role in one of pop culture's most enduring moments. He drew the original sketch for the shimmering, form-fitting gown worn by Marilyn Monroe during her famous performance of "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" for John F. Kennedy in 1962.

Among his many high-profile collaborations, Mackie's creative partnership with Cher proved to be the most defining and enduring of his career. Together, they consistently challenged established fashion conventions and reshaped television wardrobe standards, with Mackie's daring midriff-baring designs widely credited with making Cher the first woman to display her belly button on American network television.

Their partnership produced one of the most famous red carpet appearances in history at the 1986 Academy Awards. Attending the ceremony after being overlooked for a nomination for her role in the film "Mask," Cher wore a theatrical, showgirl-inspired black ensemble created by Mackie, complete with a bare midriff and a towering, feather-plumed mohawk headpiece.

The daring look became celebrated as the ultimate "revenge" outfit. Reflecting on the moment in the 2024 documentary "Bob Mackie: Naked Illusion," Cher recalled that because she had missed out on an Oscar nomination that many industry observers expected her to win, she made a deliberate choice to dress for a form of revenge that evening.

Mackie himself maintained immense admiration for Cher's ability to embody his dramatic visions. In a 2010 interview with the BBC, the designer noted that when Cher first entered the entertainment spotlight, she looked unlike anyone else in the industry, adding that audiences and critics were endlessly captivated by her because she possessed the rare ability to wear any garment successfully.

Mackie's flair for vibrant theatricality also shaped the stage identity of Sir Elton John. Among their most memorable joint efforts was the fully bedazzled Los Angeles Dodgers baseball uniform that the British musician wore during his historic 1975 concerts at Dodger Stadium.

Following the announcement of Mackie's death, Sir Elton took to Instagram to pay tribute to the late designer. He stated that wearing Mackie's creations always made him feel exceptionally special, praising the costumes as true works of art and asserting that Mackie will be remembered as one of Hollywood's greatest design legends.

In later years, Mackie's timeless theatrical style continued to attract new generations of music superstars. Pop star Pink turned to Mackie for numerous performance looks, including several elaborate stage pieces crafted for her 2009 Funhouse world tour.

Pink honored Mackie's memory following his passing, describing herself as fortunate to have collaborated with him over many years. She remembered him as a loving, sharply humorous, and genuinely brilliant creator, adding affectionately that heaven would now have some fabulously dressed angels.

Mackie's influence remained vibrant in contemporary pop culture right up until the end of his life. At last year's MTV Video Music Awards, singer Sabrina Carpenter arrived in one of his archival creations, while Miley Cyrus selected a shimmering Mackie dress for her performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, where she claimed a trophy for her hit single "Flowers."

In his personal life, Mackie was briefly married to Hollywood actress and singer Lulu Porter in 1960. The couple had a son, Robin, before divorcing three years later; Robin tragically passed away in his early thirties from an illness related to AIDS. Mackie subsequently shared a long-term personal and professional relationship with Iranian fashion designer Ray Aghayan, which lasted from 1963 until Aghayan's death in 2011.

Mackie remained deeply dedicated to his craft throughout his senior years, never showing an appetite to step away from the drawing board. When reflecting on his longevity in a 2018 interview with The Guardian, Mackie observed that he was likely the oldest working designer in Hollywood, offering a simple and definitive response when asked if he planned to retire: "I hope not."
