Denmark Summons Russian Envoy After Warship Discharges Flares at Military Helicopter Over Baltic Sea

Tensions between NATO member states and Moscow have escalated following an incident in the Baltic Sea where a Russian naval vessel discharged emergency flares at a Danish military aircraft. Danish defense officials confirmed that the confrontation occurred while the armed forces were conducting routine surveillance operations in international airspace, prompting immediate diplomatic condemnation from Copenhagen.

According to a formal statement released by the Danish armed forces, an air force Fennec helicopter was targeted while carrying out standard photographic tracking of a Russian frigate. The encounter took place in international waters off the coast of Gedser, a southern Danish town, as the military aircraft observed the movements of the Russian warship.

Military authorities reported that two emergency flares were launched directly toward the helicopter from the Russian vessel. One of the projectiles flew in close proximity to the aircraft, elevating the encounter from standard maritime shadowing to a hazardous confrontation above open waters.

In response to the encounter, the Danish government took swift diplomatic action by formally summoning the Russian ambassador. Danish officials sought to convey their severe disapproval directly to Moscow's representative, denouncing the naval maneuver as an unacceptable breach of conduct in international territory.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen addressed the encounter directly, describing the warship's actions as reckless and provocative. She emphasized that such aggressive displays are deliberately calculated by the Kremlin to intimidate Western allies and sow division across the European continent amid broader regional instability.

Echoing the prime minister's concerns, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen characterized the incident as entirely unacceptable. He warned that Moscow is actively attempting to shift the accepted boundaries of international military interactions, emphasizing that Denmark and its partners cannot permit such aggressive behavior to become normalized.

As of Tuesday, Russian authorities in Moscow have declined to provide an official explanation or public statement concerning the actions taken by the crew aboard their frigate.

The Baltic Sea incident unfolded against a backdrop of wider regional friction, occurring on the same day that NATO forces were forced to neutralize an unidentified aerial vehicle over Lithuania. The simultaneous security challenges underscore the heightened state of readiness required along NATO's eastern perimeter during Russia's ongoing full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

In the Lithuanian airspace incident, allied fighter aircraft intercepted and brought down an unmanned drone that crossed into sovereign territory shortly after midnight on Tuesday. Preliminary assessments indicated that the device likely crossed into southern Lithuania near the city of Kaunas after departing from neighboring Belarus, which remains a key strategic partner and staging ground for Russia.

The Lithuanian National Crisis Management Centre launched an immediate investigation to determine the exact origin and technical capabilities of the downed drone. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda pointed to escalating Russian military activities across the region, stressing that robust air defense readiness remains paramount for safeguarding regional integrity.

President Nausėda stated on social media that Lithuania, working in full coordination with its NATO allies, will take all necessary steps to protect its sovereign airspace against emerging threats. The proximity of Belarus, which shares an extensive border with Lithuania, continues to pose persistent defense challenges for the Baltic nation.

Neighboring Poland also reported heightened defense readiness during the same overnight period, confirming that military aviation units conducted preventive operations within its domestic airspace. The Polish defense measures were enacted in response to Russian forces launching jet-powered unmanned aerial strikes against targets situated within Ukrainian territory.

Polish defense authorities stated that these aviation missions were strictly precautionary, designed to safeguard national airspace and provide enhanced security over territories adjacent to active conflict zones across the border.

The recurring airspace intrusions reflect a pattern of recent security scares across northeastern Europe. NATO fighter aircraft have been scrambled on multiple occasions throughout the year to intercept stray drones that breached the airspace of other Baltic nations, including Estonia and Latvia.

Ukrainian officials have previously noted that many of these stray drone incidents stem from Russian electronic warfare systems. Such countermeasures are deliberately deployed by Russian forces to disrupt navigation controls and alter the intended trajectories of incoming unmanned aircraft, inadvertently or deliberately diverting them toward neighboring European borders.

The combination of naval confrontations in the Baltic Sea and repeated aerial intrusions continues to test the collective defense capabilities and diplomatic resolve of NATO allies across the continent.
