Five Dead and Dozens Wounded as Russian Drone Strikes Ukrainian Shopping Mall

Five people were killed and 67 others injured after a Russian drone struck a shopping centre in the central-eastern Ukrainian city of Pavlohrad, according to official statements from Ukrainian authorities. The attack took place in the Dnipropetrovsk region during a busy daylight period, causing severe devastation to the surrounding commercial district.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi confirmed that the strike directly hit shops and vehicles parked nearby. Vyhivskyi noted that the assault unfolded in broad daylight at a time when the surrounding public streets were bustling with residents and shoppers.

The regional governor of Dnipropetrovsk, Oleksandr Hanzha, detailed the scale of casualties in a statement on Telegram, confirming that eight children were among the 67 people wounded. Visual documentation released by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine showed emergency response teams actively directing water hoses at multiple burning vehicles as heavy clouds of smoke enveloped the street.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack and extended his condolences to the relatives and loved ones of those killed in Thursday's strike. In an official statement, Zelensky underscored that Russian forces had deployed drones against ordinary civilians who were merely standing near retail facilities.

The strike was also strongly condemned by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who described the pattern of aerial bombardments as a "tactic of coercion." Sybiha stated that Moscow is operating under the assumption that continuous strikes against civilian populations will exhaust the Ukrainian public and eventually compel the government into making concessions.

Pavlohrad, which functions as a key logistics hub located near the major central city of Dnipro, has been repeatedly targeted in previous military strikes. Just last month, an attack directed at warehouses situated in the city resulted in two deaths.

The fatal incident in Pavlohrad comes amid a broader series of strikes targeting commercial facilities across Ukrainian cities. In the north-eastern city of Sumy, officials reported that a Russian drone strike on a shopping mall on Wednesday killed two people and injured 20 others. A subsequent Russian aerial bombing in Sumy on Thursday injured eight additional people, including three children.

Similar damage was recorded earlier this week in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, the regional capital of a province partially annexed by Russia shortly after the full-scale invasion. Owners of a local shopping mall reported that their facility was almost entirely destroyed on Monday, although no casualties were recorded as the venue was closed at the time of the impact.

These recent incidents follow one of the deadliest strikes on commercial infrastructure in the conflict, which occurred last month when Russian drones hit a shopping centre in the city of Kryvyi Rih, killing at least 16 people and injuring approximately 130 others.

At the same time, Russian officials reported a series of attacks on Russian territory and Russian-controlled parts of Ukraine. Authorities in Russia stated that a Ukrainian seaborne drone operation struck the coastline of the Black Sea resort city of Sochi overnight on Wednesday, leaving 28 people wounded, including two children.

Further casualties were reported inside the Russian border on Thursday, where local officials stated that a Ukrainian drone strike on the town of Novy Oskol in the Belgorod region killed one individual and injured six others.

Russian authorities also announced several fatal incidents in Russian-held areas of the Zaporizhzhia region. An attack on a civilian car on Wednesday resulted in the death of a 15-year-old girl and injured a six-year-old child along with two women, while a separate strike against a civilian lorry in the same territory killed a man.

Commercial hubs in Russian-occupied cities have similarly been targeted by Ukrainian drone strikes in recent weeks. A drone attack was reported on Monday against a shopping mall in the occupied port city of Mariupol in the Donetsk region, following an earlier strike on commercial sites in the city of Donetsk last month.

The intense exchange of drone strikes occurs against the backdrop of stalled diplomatic efforts. Recent peacemaking initiatives carried out by envoys dispatched by US President Donald Trump over the weekend appeared to produce minimal concrete breakthroughs, following separate high-level discussions held in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin and in Kyiv with President Zelensky.

The war between the two nations has continued to escalate in scale and intensity since President Putin launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than four and a half years ago, with both sides continuing to suffer civilian casualties from widespread drone and missile strikes.
