A senior engineering executive at The New York Times was killed by gunfire in a car park in Dublin, California, and the suspects arrested minutes later are his wife's parents, police have said. Jonathan McKinsey, 40, the newspaper's director of engineering for games player experience, was found with multiple gunshot wounds outside the Dublin Sports Grounds, about 35 miles (56km) west of San Francisco, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives said the body was discovered at roughly 15:00 local time (23:00 GMT) on Thursday afternoon. Mr McKinsey, who joined one of America's best-known media organisations to work on the technical side of its games and puzzle offerings, had been in the area for an unstated reason. The circumstances of the confrontation that led to the shooting, and why he was in the car park, have not been established publicly.
Witnesses described a burst of violence that was over in a matter of seconds. Speaking to KGO-TV in San Francisco, one witness, Assad Razawi, said he heard a flurry of gunshots before seeing the man fall. "I saw the guy drop to the floor: head bloody and chest bloody," Mr Razawi told the outlet, describing visible injuries to both the head and the chest.
Another witness, the victim's daughter, said her father watched the pair leave the scene together moments after the shooting. She said her father saw an elderly man and woman "walking together and then casually walk away from the shooting" — an account that, if accurate, suggests the couple left calmly and together rather than fleeing separately or returning to a vehicle. It also suggests there was no confusion about who they were or where they were going, even in the immediate aftermath of a fatal shooting.
That detail helped investigators. Police said Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, the parents-in-law of Mr McKinsey, were detained a few minutes later by a patrol officer who happened to be driving past the scene. The couple had not left the vicinity of the attack, another witness said, and they were arrested within sight of the area where the body was found.
Both suspects are 77 years old. They are being held at the Santa Rita jail in California while they face a list of charges that includes first-degree murder, felony conspiracy, wilful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, and child endangerment. It was not immediately clear whether the couple had retained a lawyer, and they are due to appear in court on Wednesday to be formally arraigned on the charges.
The child endangerment charge is among the most striking elements of the case, and suggests that officers believed minors were present at or near the scene when the shooting took place. It is the only charge in the list that implies a concern other than the death of Mr McKinsey himself, and lawyers for the defence are likely to be expected to challenge it if the evidence does not support it.
First-degree murder is the most serious homicide charge in California's sentencing system, reserving the 25-years-to-life bracket in state prison for killings deemed to involve premeditation or particular cruelty. Felony conspiracy charges typically allege that two or more people agreed to commit a crime together, which would fit an account in which the couple travelled to the car park and acted jointly. The firearms charge reflects California's additional liability for people who discharge a weapon in a way that endangers life, whether or not they intended to kill anyone.
Police have not disclosed a motive for the killing, and no explanation has been offered publicly for what circumstances could have placed a 77-year-old couple in a car park 35 miles from San Francisco with a loaded firearm. Investigators will typically seek to reconstruct the minutes before the shooting, identify whether there had been an argument, and determine what the couple's relationship with their son-in-law had been in the period leading up to it.
The death was confirmed by The New York Times. Mr McKinsey's role placed him in a senior technical position within the company's games division, working on the systems that shape how players experience the newspaper's titles — a job that sits at the intersection of software engineering and product design. Colleagues and industry figures have not yet commented publicly on his death.
The case arrives amid persistent concern about gun violence in California, which has recorded some of the highest per-capita firearm death rates in the United States. Fatal shootings in the state frequently involve disputes that law enforcement officials describe as sudden and situational, and arrests in such cases are often made close to the scene, as they were here.
For the McKinsey family, and for the couple now facing murder charges, the coming days will bring the first formal court proceedings, where the couple are expected to be told the full extent of the evidence against them and enter pleas. For now, the central questions — why the couple were there, what preceded the gunfire, and what connection the death has to the family relationship between the suspects and the victim — remain unanswered.
