Turkish Authorities Detain Dozens in Nationwide Raids Targeting LGBTQ+ Venues and Activists

Turkish law enforcement authorities have carried out an extensive series of coordinated raids targeting gay bars and the private residences of prominent LGBTQ+ advocates, resulting in the detention of dozens of individuals over the weekend. The wide-ranging police operations, which spanned numerous administrative regions across the nation, represent a major intensification of administrative and judicial pressure directed against sexual minority groups and civil liberties advocates in Turkey.

According to official announcements, the coordinated law enforcement sweeps took place across 12 separate Turkish provinces. The comprehensive crackdown was executed under the official title of "My Family is Safe," an ongoing state-sponsored campaign that government officials maintain has been created specifically for the purpose of defending and upholding traditional family values throughout the country.

One of the central targets of the widespread police intervention was Kaos GL, recognized as one of Turkey's leading and longest-standing LGBTQ+ rights organizations. Officers conducted simultaneous actions that directly affected public hospitality venues catering to the LGBTQ+ community as well as private residential properties occupied by civil society members and organizational leaders.

Detailed information released by the Istanbul chief prosecutor’s office confirmed that police officers took 26 individuals into custody during raids conducted across the metropolitan area. The prosecutor's office stated that during the execution of search warrants on targeted sites, authorities discovered and confiscated quantities of narcotics, numerous pieces of digital equipment, supplies of smuggled alcohol, and an unlicensed firearm.

Simultaneously, a separate official bulletin published by the Ankara chief prosecutor's office announced that law enforcement had apprehended another 21 people within the capital. Judicial officials clarified that these particular detentions were carried out as part of a dedicated investigation into the structure and ongoing activities of the Kaos GL association.

While the aggregate tally released by public prosecutors placed the total number of detained individuals at 47, Kaos GL presented an alternate figure, stating that at least 50 activists were taken into custody during the weekend operations. The rights group noted that more than 10 of these activists were apprehended after police conducted intrusive, direct raids on their personal homes.

Alongside the physical arrests and premises searches, government agencies extended their enforcement actions into the digital domain. Kaos GL reported that Turkish authorities moved to restrict access to the internet by blocking several websites and communication channels associated with various LGBTQ+ rights bodies across the country.

The rights association further stated that state investigators have leveled formal accusations of "obscenity" against Kaos GL, citing public digital posts that officials claim were accessible to children. In addition to these formal allegations, administrative authorities have demanded the complete shutdown of Kaos GL's verified account on the social media platform X, alongside similar closure demands targeting the accounts of roughly 15 other LGBTQ+ advocacy groups.

The broader dimensions of the ongoing state initiative were highlighted by Turkish Justice Minister Akin Gurlek, who announced that formal legal proceedings have now been initiated against more than 160 individuals across Turkey. Gurlek noted that these judicial actions also extend to multiple private companies and non-governmental organizations located throughout several jurisdictions.

Although the justice minister did not provide a definitive national total of individuals currently held in custody, he explicitly stated that the recent police operations fall under the broader umbrella of the state's overarching "Decade of the Family" agenda, which aims to reshape public policy around domestic family matters.

The legal and social environment for the LGBTQ+ community in Turkey remains deeply challenging and fraught with systemic friction. Consensual same-sex relations between adults are not classified as a criminal offense under the Turkish legal code; however, same-sex marriage is not legally recognized, and gay couples continue to face mounting state and social pressure.

Homophobia remains widespread across the country, often reinforced by public rhetoric from the highest levels of the national government. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has routinely targeted sexual minorities in public addresses, describing LGBTQ+ individuals as "perverts" and publicly alleging that their lifestyle is directly responsible for the nation's declining birth rate.

Human rights organizations and civil society watchdogs have sharply criticized the government's measures, arguing that official rhetoric is being deliberately utilized to curtail constitutional freedoms and suppress marginalized communities. The Turkish Human Rights Association asserted that the government has increasingly used family-protection campaigns over recent years as an instrument to single out and penalize the LGBTQ+ community.

In a formal statement published on X, the Turkish Human Rights Association condemned the multi-province operation, rejecting the government's justification for the raids. The advocacy group stated that the true essence of the operation is not family safety, but rather state-led discrimination, the deployment of politics of fear, and a systematic effort to dismantle independent civil society organizations in Turkey.
