Drone Strikes Sink Merchant Ship in Bulgarian Waters as Black Sea Tensions Escalate

A merchant vessel has sunk in the Black Sea following a drone attack, leaving its crew unaccounted for, according to Bulgarian officials. The incident occurred early in the morning within Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone, marking a significant escalation in hostilities that have increasingly spilled beyond Ukrainian waters.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev confirmed that a second vessel, which was transporting grain, was also struck during the same coordinated assault. All 18 crew members aboard that ship were successfully rescued, though two required medical treatment for injuries sustained during a fire that broke out on board. The rescued sailors include eleven Turkish nationals and seven Indian citizens.

The attacks unfolded at approximately 03:00 local time, roughly 70 miles (112 kilometres) off the coast near the eastern Bulgarian town of Byala. According to Radev, both airborne and maritime drones were deployed in the operation. The vessel that sank was sailing under the flag of Togo, a small West African nation whose maritime registry is frequently used by international shipping operators.

Details regarding the sunken vessel's crew remain unclear. A Bulgarian ship was in the vicinity and responded to the scene, but upon arrival, rescuers encountered only an overturned hull, life rafts, and floating life jackets. Officials have not yet determined how many sailors were aboard the vessel at the time of the attack, nor has information about its cargo been released. A search operation is currently underway to locate any survivors.

Radev strongly condemned the strikes, describing them as "a flagrant violation of maritime law." He emphasised that an attack occurring within Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone is "absolutely unacceptable," underscoring the seriousness with which his government views the breach of its maritime sovereignty. The exclusive economic zone covers just over 29,000 square kilometres, representing approximately six percent of the Black Sea's total area.

The Bulgarian prime minister did not attribute responsibility for the attacks to any specific party. However, the incident comes amid heightened Russian military activity in the Black Sea region as part of its ongoing war against Ukraine. Moscow has not issued any comment regarding the latest strikes.

The attacks follow a pattern of increasing violence against civilian shipping in the region. Just one day prior, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of striking a civilian vessel carrying corn. That separate incident near Odesa resulted in one crew member being killed and seven others injured. According to Ukrainian media reports, the ship involved in Tuesday's attack was flying the flag of the Marshall Islands.

The situation has drawn international attention due to the targeting of commercial vessels engaged in legitimate trade. The Black Sea serves as a critical corridor for global grain exports, and attacks on cargo ships threaten to disrupt supply chains that are vital to food security in various regions worldwide. The grain-carrying vessel struck in Bulgarian waters was reportedly en route as part of these essential trade routes.

Tensions in the region have been building since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. The conflict has increasingly expanded into maritime domains, with both military and civilian vessels becoming casualties of the ongoing hostilities. The Black Sea has emerged as a key strategic theatre in the war, with both sides seeking to control shipping lanes and port access.

On Sunday, Russia's defence ministry announced its intention to intensify strikes across Ukraine. This declaration came in direct response to statements made by Zelensky earlier last week, in which the Ukrainian president indicated Kyiv would ramp up attacks on Russian oil refineries. The exchange of threats has raised concerns about further escalation and the potential for additional civilian casualties.

The involvement of drones in these attacks reflects the evolving nature of modern warfare. Unmanned aerial and maritime vehicles have become increasingly prominent tools in the conflict, allowing for strikes on distant targets without risking personnel. This technological shift has significant implications for maritime security, as traditional naval defence mechanisms may struggle to counter these relatively low-cost but highly effective weapons.

The international community has yet to respond formally to the latest incidents. However, the strikes within a NATO member state's exclusive economic zone could have broader diplomatic consequences. Bulgaria, as a NATO member, may seek to invoke alliance consultations regarding the breach of its maritime territory. The incident underscores the potential for the conflict to spread beyond Ukrainian borders and affect neighbouring nations.

Bulgaria's Black Sea coastline has become a frontline in the broader regional instability. The rescue efforts that saved 18 sailors demonstrate the dangers faced by merchant mariners who continue to operate in these contested waters. Shipping companies and crew members now face difficult decisions about whether to continue operations in a region where civilian vessels have become targets.

The search for missing sailors continues as Bulgarian authorities work to determine the full scope of the tragedy. The identity of the sunken vessel's crew and the nature of its cargo remain unknown, leaving questions about the complete impact of the attack. As the investigation proceeds, the international maritime community will be watching closely to see how this latest incident affects security in one of the world's most strategically important bodies of water.
